Opening Chapters Assessment

The first chapters of a book carry a lot of weight - they set the tone, establish its setting and world, and decide whether a reader keeps turning the pages. This service offers a clear, honest assessment of your opening chapters (up to three), written by a BA (Hons) Creative Writing graduate and experienced self‑published author.

This isn’t editing, and it isn’t a technical breakdown. It’s a thoughtful, truthful response to your work: what’s landing well, what may need strengthening, and how the opening reads from a craft‑aware perspective. We'll highlight the natural strengths in your writing, point out areas that could be sharpened, and offer observations grounded in technique without overwhelming you with jargon.

If you want a genuine reader’s reaction shaped by our creative‑writing training and real publishing experience, this assessment is designed to give you exactly that - supportive, honest, and focused on helping your book begin as strongly as possible.

How To Request An Assessment

Simply complete the form below.  Fiction and non-fiction are welcome.  We'll get back to you with details of how to send your work.

The form keeps everything simple and ensures we have what we need to understand the work.

What Happens Next

Once we receive your form, we’ll check the details and confirm we have everything we need. We’ll then send you an invoice for a nominal fee of £20. This small contribution helps cover the running costs of the site and keeps the service accessible to as many authors as possible. And then you can send the file, as a PDF, via email.

What you receive:

  • an honest assessment of your work

  • areas for improvement

  • constructive feedback

We will not edit your work and we will not send you a highly technical report - but may refer to some techniques when appropriate.

It’s a simple, affordable way to identify any key issues with a view to helping you shape the words that will follow.  This is a light developmental edit.

A Final Thought
