What’s the Best Font for a Novel?

Most novels use clean, readable serif fonts - the kind designed for long stretches of text. There’s no single “best” choice, but there are reliable standards that look professional in print and on eReaders.

Common, Professional Fonts

  • Garamond - classic, elegant, widely used in publishing

  • Minion Pro - modern, balanced, very readable

  • Baskerville - traditional and crisp

  • Palatino - slightly larger feel, great for accessibility

  • Georgia - designed for screens, works well for eBooks

These are the kinds of fonts readers are used to seeing in traditionally published books.

A Note on Licensing

Many popular fonts aren’t free for commercial use. Garamond, Baskerville, Minion Pro, and others often require a licence if you’re distributing a book commercially - even as a self‑publisher.

The good news is that there are free, high‑quality alternatives:

  • EB Garamond (free alternative to Garamond)

  • Cormorant (inspired by classic book fonts)

  • Libre Baskerville (free Baskerville‑style option)

  • Source Serif Pro (clean, modern, open‑source)

These are safe to use in commercial projects and look excellent in print and digital formats.

Practical Advice

Choose a serif font that feels comfortable to read, check that it’s licensed for commercial use, and keep your formatting consistent throughout.

Remember - these aren’t rules, just guidelines.
