What’s the Best Font for a Novel?
Most novels use clean, readable serif fonts - the kind designed for long stretches of text. There’s no single “best” choice, but there are reliable standards that look professional in print and on eReaders.
Common, Professional Fonts
Garamond - classic, elegant, widely used in publishing
Minion Pro - modern, balanced, very readable
Baskerville - traditional and crisp
Palatino - slightly larger feel, great for accessibility
Georgia - designed for screens, works well for eBooks
These are the kinds of fonts readers are used to seeing in traditionally published books.
A Note on Licensing
Many popular fonts aren’t free for commercial use. Garamond, Baskerville, Minion Pro, and others often require a licence if you’re distributing a book commercially - even as a self‑publisher.
The good news is that there are free, high‑quality alternatives:
EB Garamond (free alternative to Garamond)
Cormorant (inspired by classic book fonts)
Libre Baskerville (free Baskerville‑style option)
Source Serif Pro (clean, modern, open‑source)
These are safe to use in commercial projects and look excellent in print and digital formats.
Practical Advice
Choose a serif font that feels comfortable to read, check that it’s licensed for commercial use, and keep your formatting consistent throughout.
Remember - these aren’t rules, just guidelines.
