What’s the Difference Between a Blurb and a Synopsis?
A blurb and a synopsis both describe your book, but they serve completely different purposes - and they’re written in completely different ways.
Blurb
This is the short, enticing text you’d find on the back of a book or on a retailer page. Its job is simple: make the reader want to read more.
Teases the premise
Hints at conflict
Creates intrigue
Never reveals the ending
Written to hook, not explain
Think of it as marketing copy - emotional, selective, and focused on curiosity.
Synopsis
This is a behind‑the‑scenes document used for submissions, editing, or planning. Its job is to explain the whole story clearly.
Covers the full plot
Includes major twists
Reveals the ending
Shows character arcs
Written plainly and without suspense
It’s not meant to sell the book - it’s meant to show how the story works.
A blurb invites. A synopsis explains.
