What’s the Difference Between a Blurb and a Synopsis?

A blurb and a synopsis both describe your book, but they serve completely different purposes - and they’re written in completely different ways.

Blurb

This is the short, enticing text you’d find on the back of a book or on a retailer page. Its job is simple: make the reader want to read more.

  • Teases the premise

  • Hints at conflict

  • Creates intrigue

  • Never reveals the ending

  • Written to hook, not explain

Think of it as marketing copy - emotional, selective, and focused on curiosity.

Synopsis

This is a behind‑the‑scenes document used for submissions, editing, or planning. Its job is to explain the whole story clearly.

  • Covers the full plot

  • Includes major twists

  • Reveals the ending

  • Shows character arcs

  • Written plainly and without suspense

It’s not meant to sell the book - it’s meant to show how the story works.

A blurb invites. A synopsis explains.
